Rachel Small – Remedial Massage Therapist
You might say it has taken me some time to find my purpose in life. I have worked in various industries, and for various companies, but I’ve never strayed far from working with people. Whether it’s been in retail, in call centres, teaching, or office administration, helping people to achieve their best has always been what I love to do.
But then almost 10 years ago I dragged my sister along to a free afternoon class run at my local library to learn Indian head massage. This is when I truly fell in love with massage. I felt how healing it could be, how invigorating. And I was good at it! This was something that I really wanted to pursue.
I spent about 5 years mulling it over – meanwhile gaining my librarian qualifications, working part-time in a library, having a child – you know, little things. But massage never left my mind. It was always there, niggling at me. Having a child really gets your priorities in order, and I wanted to start doing something more tactile and more nurturing. So, when my son was almost 2 years old I decided to take the bull by the horns and return to study. This was when I realised this is what I was supposed to do.
Now, as qualified remedial massage therapist, I have a special interest in assisting clients with chronic pain, depression, anxiety and needing stress relief. Pregnancy massage is also an area of particular interest, supporting women through this amazing life journey.
Often my clients report having less pain after massage, feeling lighter, energized and renewed. I believe this is in part due to the individualised service I offer my clients.
I understand that every person has different reasons for seeking out massage treatments, and different goals for their sessions. With this in mind, I don’t have a “cookie cutter” approach, treating every client the same. I listen and I ask questions, I ensure that everything I do is with the total and complete understanding of my client. I may combine different massage methods, or we may focus on one area of your body, but always your treatment program will be updated at every visit and tailored to suit your needs.
Seeing the immediate impact on my clients’ lives that a great massage has, makes my work meaningful. Every single massage treatment I undertake is important to me, bringing me joy and deep satisfaction. Assisting people along their journey to manage chronic pain, mental health issues, and stress relief, or even just have a little pampering, brings me great delight to my work and life.
