Massage Therapy for TMJ Dysfunction (TMJD)

TMJD (temporomandibular joint dysfunction) is a common condition affecting the jaw joint and surrounding muscles. It can cause discomfort, pain, restricted movement, and associated symptoms like headaches, ear fullness, or even dizziness. At Myomasters Massage, we offer remedial massage specifically tailored for people experiencing TMJD, with a focus on restoring comfortable movement and relieving pain.

The TMJ is a complex joint. To be able to hinge open, first the joint must glide forward. Most of the muscles of the jaw are associated with clenching. You can feel the primary muscles in your cheeks (masseter), and also in your temples (temporalis). But the muscles that act on or are in partnership with the jaw are also in the base of the skull (sub occipital group), under the jaw (digastric, hyoids and platysma), and even deep inside the mouth (medial and lateral pterygoid). This is all a nerve rich environment, particularly the trigeminal nerve and TMJD can lead to symptoms beyond jaw pain including facial pain, headaches, and other symptoms.

What Is TMJD?

Specifically TMJD refers to issues affecting the jaw joint (temporomandibular joint) and its associated muscles, often due to:

  • Teeth grinding or clenching (bruxism)
  • Poor posture (especially forward head posture)
  • Trauma or injury to the jaw or neck especially a whiplash injury
  • Dental procedures or prolonged mouth opening especially intubation from surgery
  • Prolonged emotional stress or anxiety

Common symptoms include:

  • Jaw pain or clicking/popping
  • Limited ability to open or close the mouth
  • Headaches and facial pain
  • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
  • Neck and shoulder tension
  • Dizziness or jaw-related migraines

When to See a Dentist or Specialist

While massage therapy can help relieve muscular components of TMJD, you may also need a dentist or TMJ specialist if:

  • Pain is sharp, joint-based, or gets worse with chewing
  • You’ve had recent dental work, injury, or dislocation
  • Evidence of disc displacement, arthritis or disease
  • You need assessment for splints, occlusion issues, or referral to an oral surgeon

Talking to your dentist and GP is especially important if you grind your teeth while sleeping. A dentist will prescribe a night splint / guard to protect your teeth from damage.

Massage therapy can work in parallel with these approaches to reduce muscular guarding, treat the head face and neck globally, and also in reducing physical stress.

How Massage Therapy Can Help

Remedial massage for TMJD targets the soft tissues contributing to pain and dysfunction. Treatments typically focus on:

  • Trigger point therapy for the masseter, temporalis, digastric, and suboccipital muscles
  • Myofascial release to reduce tension and improve jaw mobility
  • Intraoral massage (gloved and targeted) for the medial and lateral pterygoid muscles
  • Neck and shoulder release to support postural alignment and nervous system regulation

Treatments are:
  • Tailored to your symptoms and comfort level
  • Grounded in evidence-based practice
  • Suitable as a stand-alone option or part of a broader care team (e.g. working alongside dentists, physios or ENT specialists)

We understand how frustrating jaw pain can be — especially when it affects eating, speaking, and sleep. Our goal is to help you move and feel better, using hands-on techniques that are effective and respectful.
